Botox®
What
is botox®?
Botox injections, when used for cosmetic purposes, are primarily administered to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and facial creases on the upper part of the face. If you have unwanted vertical lines between your brows (either a “1” or “11’s”), horizontal forehead lines or crow’s feet on the lateral sides of eyes and want to soften them, then Botox treatments may be for you. The results of Botox are temporary lasting about 3-4 months. Botox, the first injectable neurotoxin on the market, has become the most commonly known bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Other lesser known brands like Dysport or Xeomin are also available in many medical practices. In small amounts and when given by an experienced medical practitioner, Botox has been found to be safe to use long term. You can stop getting injections anytime without your skin looking worse than it did before you started using Botox. Botox delivers predictable and subtle results with less noticeable aging lines at rest while giving you a more youthful natural look.

How Does Botox® Work?

As we age, several factors contribute to the creation of wrinkles increasing the appearance of aging skin. As we enter our 30’s, our skin begins to experience cellular changes (collagen reduction and free radial damage from sun and environment). Individual genetic propensities and expressions caused by repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines.
Botox injections works by disrupting the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine signals from the nerve axon endings to the specific muscle that contributes the wrinkle/crease. If the muscle is unable to contract, the wrinkle smooths and relaxes. The ideal number of units needing to be injected varies per person and is best determined by your practitioner. Most patients start to see the positive effects of Botox in 3-4 days post injection. Optimal results typically show in 10-14 days. It’s wise to make a 2 week follow-up appointment to ensure you’re satisfied with the Botox outcome. Most patients require minimal downtime and can return to their daily activities post your injection appointment.
